When you think tattoo art mixed with fashion, Sullen Art Collective is the first thing that pops up. Sullen got it’s start from being heavily influenced by Southern California beach culture and tattoo inspired art. With a strong focus on ideals and practices of modern tattooers, Sullen evolved from a small group of art driven tattooers and artists into a world renowned “Art Collective”.
Sullen is the fruits of hard work and guerilla marketing, what started as a logo based action sports brand eventually turned it’s sights on unmarked territory. Ink driven art. Which at the time (est. 2011) was just getting into the grind of being one of the most influential trends of the century. Tattoo’s have come along way from it’s origins and the artist’s that practice the skill have advanced to new heights. Combining the trend of tattoo art and fashion was a easy adjustment says Jeremy Hanna and C0-Founder Ryan “ColorCrimes” Smith (20+ year veteran tattooer). According to the duo it came with plenty of ups and downs. They spoke with the OC Weekly in a previous article about their start. Read more here.
“We always knew we would succeed,” Hanna says. “We knew that anything that required extra effort, that’s where we’d succeed. We didn’t have the money that some people had, but not everyone was willing to grind like we were. We were driving around throwing up stickers in the middle of the night, things like that. There was a lot of uncertainty, but we always knew we’d succeed.”
“If your heart’s not in it, you won’t find success,” Smith says. “The sacrifices you have to make just to create a living, breathing business, we wouldn’t be able to recreate it. There were some hard times.”
I have know Jeremy for some years now and I can tell you from a personal note that the success of Sullen has never gone to their heads. Hanna is one of the most humble cats I have ever met and such a down to earth person. He attends almost every event and is there for the all the supporters. Shaking hands, taking photos and talking story.
There was a period of time when they started. That we here in the SoCal area knew the name Sullen very well but the rest of the world had no idea who they were. Now with Collectives around the world and every great artist is dying to do collabs with most sought after brand in the industry. Sullen’s reach has gone well beyond just fashion. On the daily artists are submitting their version of the renowned Sullen Badge.
With tremendous art submissions on the daily they have no fear of ever running out of art for their tattoo driven apparel and accessories. Here is just a few amazing tees from the Sullen Collective 2016 line up.
