This week I caught up with one of Gran Canaria’s best rapper’s whoisdae. On a personal level I’ve been friends with Dae for well over 5 years now. Throughout the years I’ve seen him grow as an artist, from supporting Jonny Craig on his UK tour in 2012, right through to working on multiple tracks with Steve Lean, who’s signed to 808 Mafia and is currently one of Spain’s most important producers. Interested in finding out a little bit more about his guilty pleasures, a crazy ex-girlfriend, and how he came up with his name? Then read on…

Tattoos, drawing, graphic design, gym, nature documentaries…there’s hella things I enjoy

3. Any guilty pleasures?
Teleshopping…y’all know that shit is addictive doe!
4. What was the last song you listened to?
The Weeknd – Sidewalks
5. What’s your biggest fear?
Depths, it creeps me out to be in the swimming ocean and not knowing what the fuck is wandering underneath
6. Tell us about the last dream you had?
It was clearly too sexual to tell y’all about it
7. What’s your favourite insult?
Being from the Canary Islands doesn’t help so expect me to yell ”Hijo Puta” most of the time I get annoyed
8. One word to describe yourself?
9. What’s your favourite food?
It has to be Mexican….Italian food…junk food. Man, I love all kinds of food
10. If you wasn’t doing music, what would you be doing?
Prolly tattooing or anything art related, I quit making tattoos for a living to run
my own music studio
11. How did you come up with the name “whoisdae”?
There’s a whole lotta story behind my name. I came to the game as Dae Bryson. My name is David, so I shortened it to Dae, and Bryson is my grandmothers last name so I wanted to keep it. Funny thing is that I actually got to link up with Bryson Tiller before he blew up because we shared the ”Bryson” in our names, it was around 2011/2012. Then this guy called Dae Dae from Atlanta went viral and I was like, it’s time for a name change, and after a good two years trying to come up with a good one I decided to take whoisdae because I actually don’t know who I am. You keep evolving your whole life and changing. That’s what I aim for, I don’t wanna do the same thing my whole life, and you can’t expect what I will do next, singing, rapping or playing an acoustic set. So who the fuck is Dae? Only thing I know is that Dae got the answers.
12. Where do you usually gather inspiration for songwriting?
I used to write music but it’s not how I make music anymore. I just get in front of a mic and vibe with a beat, or start to sing or rap about how I feel in that exact moment. Sometimes it’s all freestyle or sometimes I flow and tweak minor parts to make it sound better. I feel like if I write down lyrics before having a beat then when I jump into a beat it doesn’t sound natural. Them days of writing down lyrics are over for me.
13. Who are your biggest influences?
I grew up listening to a wide variety of styles and to me thats key, from Kool & The Gang to Rage Against The Machine, and even Jaco Pastorius. I’ve always tried to enjoy and find good stuff in every style, but I mainly grew up on some Funk/Soul shit. I can’t solely name a few influences because there’s so many styles I enjoy the list would be massive.
14. Who’s one artist you’d love to collab with?
Most of my dream collabs are dead – George Duke, Nate Dogg and Michael Jackson, but I don’t rely on collabs much. I only collab with the people I respect, I don’t pull the collab card as a way to reach a wider demographic audience.
15. What’s your favourite city to play?
Any cities with palm trees are always welcome
16. If you got to relive one tour again, which would it be?
Can’t mention a favorite tour cause I’ve only toured twice and I’ve always portrayed myself as a producer rather than a singer. But now I’m focused on my own music, and trying to merge both roles as a whole.
17. What’s the wierdest thing that’s happened to you on tour?
I’m not gonna mention the stereotypical groupie tale, but I was on stage performing and the girlfriend I had at the time (she’s actually gon read this, so this goes out to her FUCK YOU!) couldn’t manage her jealousy and spent the whole tour mad over the dumbest things. She was always texting me on some bullshit so I was performing and my phone started vibrating in my pocket, I stopped rapping for a few seconds trying to focus on the performance and started freestyling talking shit about her. I guess that’s better than fucking up the whole song.
18. Do you have any future tour plans?
Yeah, once me and my partner in crime Nestakilla are done with our albums people can expect us to rock the stages again.
19. How about any upcoming releases?
I’m actually working with Steve Lean. He’s one of the hottest producers out right now and he’s also affiliated to 808 Mafia. Me and him have been working on a lot of songs for a while and most of them are being featured on my first mixtape ”Fuck Your Favorite Rapper”. It’s also my first time working hand in hand with another producer and I’m beyond happy with the chemistry between us. There’s also hella collabs coming with The Zombie Kids, Nestakilla, and Elhae to name a few.
20. Anything else you’d like to share?
Fuck your favourite rapper
