Red Bull Art of Motion: Santorini gets the freerunner treatment

The underdog takes it all at Red Bull Art of Motion 2017, on the gorgeous island of Santorini

This year’s outsider, Alexander Titarenko from the Ukraine, stunned the judges and the spectators by landing in first place.

In what might just be the most picturesque action sports event anywhere in the world this year, freerunners from 13 different countries scaled Santorini’s iconic white buildings.

And, when all was said and done, it was the unknown Alexander Titarenko that stole the show. The Ukrainian took top spot over Nate Weston who came second. The top three was rounded out by local runner Dimitris Kyrsanidis.

Titarenko couldn’t believe it after the event.

“I still can’t believe it! I set off just hoping to make it through the Onsite Qualifier and suddenly the whole world was congratulating me on this year’s victory. It’s an honor to be among the leading athletes in the world. I’m just shocked,” he said.

 

On the female side of the event it was Russian Aleksandra Shevchenko won took top spot in a stacked field.

Red Bull Art of Motion 2017 Men results:

 

1.Alexander Titarenko (UKR) 418 points, 2. Nate Weston (USA) 386 points, 3. Dimitris Kyrsanidis (GRE) 384 points, 4. Calen Chan (USA) 346 points, 5. Pedro Salgado (POR) 330 points, 6. Valtteri Luoma Aho (FIN) 309 points.
